How to get the most from your retirement
Vera Waters has worked in the Health Service, and been a counselling consultant and adviser to the police force. Now a life coach and inspirational speaker, she has written four books and two CDs in which she encourages her readers to find the confidence to cope with whatever life has to offer. Here Vera gives us her top tips for a great retirement:
1. Your retirement is a door opening to the rest of your life. Every moment is important.
2. Make plans - give yourself a focus. If you are in a couple, plan together but take into account that most of us also benefit from some personal space.
3. If you live alone, make a list each morning of what you hope to do. Include your every-day routine tasks. When each one is completed, cross it off the list and you’ll feel a sense of achievement.
4. Review your diet. Eat less & more often. Big meals give little consideration to our inner systems.
5. Make a wish list of things you have always wanted to do. Take advantage of new opportunities. Find out what is happening in your area. Be part of it!
6. Get out of the house each day. Meet with friends especially those with a sense of humour. Laughter is good for us.
7. Taking care of others can be a positive experience but give yourself time to recharge your batteries!
8. When you feel pressured by events remember that some pressure is good for us. After all, it takes a lot of pressure to turn coal into diamonds!
9. Explore free bus travel. You’ll have no parking hassles and can visit lots of different places. Ask a friend or a neighbour if they would like to join you or travel solo and enjoy the change of scenery.
10. Nurture a healthy respect for the person who lives in your mirror. Believe in yourself!
Finally, take care of yourself. Keep as fit and healthy as you can as your new life is just beginning. You have joined the ranks of the wise and wonderful!
